It's a Wonder He's Not Hallucinating

Cam arrived home yesterday around noon after an overnight bus ride from the Robotics competition in Atlanta. You should have seen the dark circles under his eyes! He self-proclaimed proudly, of course, that he had only gotten 1-2 hours of sleep a night. Whatever! I remember being proud of that when I was his age, too, but it was usually just one nights worth. Mark picked him up at the bus drop off point, brought him home, I saw him for a minute before I ran out the door in search of a new suitcase for our NYC trip. When I got home a couple of hours later he was already at his friend Bonnie's house. I couldn't believe it! How good of company could he have been? Turns out he spent a good portion of the day catching catnaps while Bonnie and her cousin played computer games. When I picked him up at Bonnie's at 9:30pm I let him stay up just long enough to upload his pictures from the trip, then sent him packing to bed. I wonder what time he'll get up today?!

On another exciting note, Mom called from Turkey over the weekend to say they had located several Turkish rugs that met our size and color specs. We ended up choosing a blue print 10 X 13 rug that contains a lot of the earthy colors in our house. We're very excited and look forward to getting it in the fall. It will be shipped back to DC with Dave and Amanda's furnishings when they leave Ankara in early July, so it will take several months to get here. No worries, though. Since we'll be choosing new furniture and window treatments based on the rug, it looks like that part of the project will extend into the new year. Very cool!!

The Long-Awaited-Much-Anticipated Freshman Dance

Last weekend Annalisse went to the freshman dance with 18 of her closet friends. Unfortunately, she did not have a date with an actual boy, but that's really a blessing in disguise because, as much as she likes to "talk the talk," she's not ready to "walk the walk" and is very hesitant about boys (Whew! I can relax a little longer on that one!). Anyway, between having her braces off and a new hair-do (combined with a new dress, new jewelry, and new shoes), she was all gussied up and off to a friends house by 5:30pm for group pictures. All the girls looked so nice! The best thing was they had a lot of fun at the dance itself - not always the case as sometimes the prep is funner than the actual event. I'm sure talk will now turn to next year's 10th grade dance, during which the kids will kick it up a notch with gowns, tuxedos and limo rentals. As Nonnie used to say, oh mamma mia!

The Last Dance

Another milestone alert: last night was the last high school dance for the Bakers. Since Cam did not really do any of that formal dance stuff, we had to get the best bang for our buck out of the second child, and she definitely delivered. It's been four years of fancy dresses, updos and makeup, and walking the dog last night came the realization that "it's over." The Week that Was

What a news week! Unless you live under a rock, you know there were some pretty important issues in the news this week, all of which I am happy about  - being the bleeding heart liberal that I am! First up, the removal of the confederate flag from buildings in the South (not just South Carolina). After the tragic murder of nine innocent people at a church prayer service in South Carolina last week, the confederate flag became the focus (and has long been the emblem) of white supremacist hatred, seeing such activity as the inspiration for the shooter. While I would love the warmer weather in the South, I'm not sure I can deal with their attitudes. Take down that flag! On Thursday, the SCOTUS decision to uphold provisions of the Affordable Care Act (which others call "Obamacare," but I refuse to call it that...I find it a term derogatorily used by the crazy conservatives).
