Okay, where was I...? Oh yes! Girl's Weekend!!

Girl's Weekend
The last weekend in September, Sue, Lorie, Gina, Heather and I embarked on our 11th annual girls weekend, this year to Lake Placid, site of the 1980 Winter Olympics (Miracle on Ice, anyone?).

Just an aside before we get started: How can it be that I grew up  1 1/2 hours from Lake Placid and DID NOT go to the 1980 Winter Olympics??!!

We stayed at the Golden Arrow Resort, which was the perfect place to stay - right on main street near the shops and restaurants, overlooking Mirror Lake. Our suite opened up to a patio with furniture, where we spent quiet time just chatting and enjoying the view. Our friend, Clare, could not make it to girl's weekend, so Laurie ingeniously created a stuffed "Clare" who seemed to get into tons of trouble all weekend (hanging out in the bar...so drunk she needed to be carried home, flirting with the guy in the room next door). As usual, there was tons of laughter!

The Lake Placid area was sooooo beautiful the last weekend in September. We walked a lot, took a gondola ride up to "Little Whiteface," drove up Whiteface mountain (and hiked/climbed rocks the last 1/5 of a mile up - check my post about meeting people in random places), and stopped in for a little nostalgia at The North Pole/Santa's Workshop. We all reminisced about visiting Santa's Workshop during our childhood, EXCEPT for Sue, who apparently, despite her family's spending so much time in the Adirondacks, NEVER got inside the gate of the North Pole. Well, that explains a lot. I suppose it's nothing years of therapy can't undo.

All agreed that Lake Placid was an ideal location for Girl's weekend, especially in the fall. It was breathtakingly beautiful and appropriately quaint. Another wonderful weekend spent with my girls!

The Week that Was

What a news week! Unless you live under a rock, you know there were some pretty important issues in the news this week, all of which I am happy about  - being the bleeding heart liberal that I am! First up, the removal of the confederate flag from buildings in the South (not just South Carolina). After the tragic murder of nine innocent people at a church prayer service in South Carolina last week, the confederate flag became the focus (and has long been the emblem) of white supremacist hatred, seeing such activity as the inspiration for the shooter. While I would love the warmer weather in the South, I'm not sure I can deal with their attitudes. Take down that flag! On Thursday, the SCOTUS decision to uphold provisions of the Affordable Care Act (which others call "Obamacare," but I refuse to call it that...I find it a term derogatorily used by the crazy conservatives). Bakers on the move

The next couple of weeks will find a lot of Bakers coming and going and coming and going, starting with a quick trip down to Rockville, MD for Cam's first in-person job interview. The company seems to contract to government agencies, and with his background,  if he got the job, he might end up at a place like the NIH . One step at a time, though. Please send positive vibes! Our busy week will culminate in Cam's graduation from RIT on Saturday morning (8:30am). I know he's a little stressed trying to finish things up, but the finish line is in sight! After graduation we will go for a nice lunch at Woodcliff, then decide the strategy for moving him home before June 1. Then, a week from tomorrow we bring Annalisse to Toronto for her flight to Italy for her study abroad (studying the Mediterranean diet for two weeks). Then, two weeks after that we will be in Dublin for a week! YAY! Just about everything is set for our trip except the rental car from Dublin to the Cork area
